The City of Atlanta and Atlanta Housing received a Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant for $40 million with the purpose of transforming the Bowen Choice Neighborhood, in the West Hollowell sector along Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway. This federal grant awarded by HUD will go a long way to supporting Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens’ vision for Westside Atlanta including the focused strategies: Housing, People, and Neighborhood.

Along with redevelopment of the former Bowen Homes site to include sustainable mixed-income housing, the overall vision will support commercial blight removal, contaminated properties clean-up, public safety efforts, and community resource programs to improve health, education and economic outcomes for the area and its residents. With a total of over $500 million anticipated for these programs, the community is staged for positive growth and expansion.

Atlanta Housing spent over two years engaging with the community to develop the Bowen Choice Neighborhood Transformation Plan, including a Resident Advisory Committee, focus groups, and a Bowen Choice Steering Committee. The Plan was driven by the guiding principles of connectivity, equitable housing, environmental conservation, and honor for the history of the community and its residents.

All of the revitalization efforts will support the surrounding communities of Almond Park and Carey Park, where Bellwood Homes builds and has created an inclusive, vibrant, and supportive community.
